“You do ill if you praise, but worse if you censure, what you do not understand.” – Leonardo da Vinci
Da Vinci is one of my favorite philosophers and artists. I just found this quote the other day and I’m so on it and he’s right to censure shit and not try and under it is an injustice to the intellectual.
But I don’t think we do ill if we praise because some people deserve recognition for things they do and if they don’t get it enough from people they feel count the most in their lives where’s that extra sense of worth that comes from “praise” from a loved one going to come from?
To praise someone for making a wrong or bone headed decision in the larger scope of things is sort of a call of judgment on the individual giving praise. You can cause harm for appeasing a weak willed person with praise for a menial task, but on the other hand, it could boost them up as well… But to what extent can we let a retard feel they deserve “praise?” Maybe da Vinci has a point…
Let’s just say:
“Anything in any way beautiful derives its beauty from itself and asks nothing beyond itself. Praise is no part of it, for nothing is made worse or better by praise.” – Marcus Aurelius
