I’m having an Estelle Getty/Golden Girls moment..
Picture it, Summertime… Long Island, NY… 2003… One of the hottest summers ever and my first year back from school and loving the freedom of finally being out on my own and having the jump off spot with my white brother Kenny. I was back home and just getting into the music business officially and while I was at Univeral Music Group working with Nu… I encountered, Lumidee… Uh Oooh…
I remember hearing the beat to this record way back in 2002 on the Dewali Riddim (All my Dance Hall heads know what I’m talking about). It was one of the last powerful riddims to break through to the mainstream because of it having 2 smashes on it (Sean Paul “Get Busy” & Wayne Wonder “No Letting Go”).
Lumidee had lifted and stripped down the record to its bare bones and sang her little chubby off key ass to a hit! It broke heavy in NYC because of a co-sign from HOT97 and Cipha Sounds and Funkmaster Flex. When I was out in L.A. that summer and heard this shit on the radio there… I knew it was over. But like all quick rising smash hits; it eventually faded away and she had trouble making another hit till 2006 when she linked up with Tony Sunshine for “She’s Like The Wind” (which I liked).
Long story short… I hated this song when I first heard it. I hated Lumidee. I hated Universal for giving her a rumored $10 million label deal. Think I hated everything that wasn’t Rocafella back then…I don’t know…
Now listening to it again, can appreciating the song for what it is and I like it. It’s like my opinion on people around me has changed and so has my ears when it comes to music… I ain’t mad at this and other shit I used to be mad at for no reason. Let’s call it a “Renaissance of Renewed Love in H Diddy” I’ve grown a bit and I’ve taken enough shots in my life to know that emotional pain is mostly self inflicted.
Bottom line… Now I got nothing, but love… Uh Oooh 😉
